The appeal of side characters

As I commented on his post, I'm wondering if (especially in long-running franchises) the main characters are too safe for their actions to be meaningful or interesting. You can be pretty sure that the central protagonists will succeed at most of what they try to do, especially if you're on volume 12, chapter 200, or episode 630. The side characters, however, could still fail and thus have more at risk.
